Swagger Jager

He gives off a distinctly 70s track and field vibe, and his hair even has its own spoof twitter account (@JagersHair). US steeplechase record holder Evan Jager tells SPIKES how he got his look.

“I started growing my hair out during my sophomore/junior year of high school and when it got to a good length I decided I liked it, so I just kept it long and haven’t cut it short since. I haven’t modelled my hair on anyone else. Growing it out just kind of happened.

“I actually started wearing the headband at the same time I started growing my hair. I saw other kids wearing them and I wanted to try wearing one too. I ended up having a good race, so I just kept on wearing one. After that season it kind of turned into an identity thing, and I actually felt weird not wearing one.

“The earrings came from a bet. As part of my high school 4x800m relay team we all said we would get our ears pierced if we won ‘State’, which we ended up doing. Naturally, we had to get our ears pierced.

“I started wearing a bracelet in 2009, after moving away from home at the
University of Wisconsin. One of my friends made me a bracelet and I wore it the entire season. Since then, I’ve just kinda liked how it looked so I rolled with it. Speaking of which, I have to make sure I have a new one for the upcoming season.”
