Meet Russia’s world and Olympic 800m champion Mariya Savinova, quickly.
How did you celebrate winning your 800m gold medal at London 2012?
I celebrated my gold after coming back to Moscow with my closest friends.
If you had to choose another event outside of the 800m, what would it be and why?
Most likely the 400m, I like to feel the speed.
What did you have for breakfast today?
As always, a big cup of coffee and homemade cookies. SPIKES thinks this sounds like a great breakfast routine.
Favourite pre-competition snack?
Before the competition I usually go for pasta and chicken breasts.
What are your plans for today?
Today is my rest day, so I plan to have much sleep, so much that it will be enough for the whole of next week.
If anyone could play you in a film, who would it be?
I’ve never thought about that, I have no idea.
Who was your most impressive teacher at school?
My PE teachers, they influenced me in my decision to take up athletics.
What’s the one thing you have to take with you around the circuit?
It is my cell phone. When the race is over I call my husband and tell him how it felt and he, having watched the race on the TV, tells me what it looked like.
Have any superstitions?
If you weren’t an athlete what would you be doing?
I can’t even imagine. I’ve been doing sports since kindergarten and I can’t picture myself doing anything else.
What’s the worst thing you’ve ever worn?
I don’t have any horrible things in my wardrobe. I try to dress up harmoniously.
How much money do you have in your pocket at the moment?
I have about 2500 soms as I’m at the training camp in Kirgizia, Kyrgyzstan. That’s about $53, €40 or £33.
Do you have a favourite holiday destination?
I fell in love with Barcelona during the 2010 European Championships. This year I went there for my vacation with my friends. And it’s a huge pity that I couldn’t make it to the IAAF Gala which was held there. We missed you too, Mariya.
Could you name your three celebrity dinner party guests?
I’d invite Russia’s Olympic champions Yuliya Zaripova (3000m steeplechase) Ivan Ukhov (high jump) and Anna Chicherova (high jump).
