Dawn Harper takes the world’s fastest interview

Dawn Harper on Alicia Keys, Will Smith and Thanksgiving family-time at aunt Flossie’s house

Favourite holiday destination?
My aunt Flossie’s house in East St Louis where we meet every Thanksgiving and Christmas.

What did you have for breakfast today?
Ooops. It was really bad. I actually had a doughnut and a sausage, egg muffin from McDonalds.

If you could choose an another event other than your own to compete in what would it be and why?
The 100m. I love the pure speed of the event and to have the title as the fastest women alive would be awesome.

What is your favourite pre-competition snack?
Granola chewy bars.

What are your plans for today?
I did a photoshoot for Delux magazine and then I’m doing this interview. I’m still fiddling with my hair and I have make up all over my face.

Who would play you in a film and why?
Sanaa Lathan. I was very impressed with her and how dedicated she is to all the roles she plays.

Who was your most inspirational teacher and why?
It was my second grade teacher Mrs King. She really paid attention and cared about me. When I was younger I had quite a bit of attitude. It wasn’t really bad, but I remember once I found a pencil on the ground. Another kid said it was hers and told me to give it back. I was really mad because it was pretty and colourful and my teacher said ‘you’re too pretty to get that mad’ and made me sit in the corner.

What is the one thing you have to take with you on the circuit?
Cross earrings and necklace.

Any superstitions?
Not really a supersition but I pray before every race.

What would you be doing if you were not an athlete?
I always wanted to be teacher but now I would be a psychologist because that’s what I studied at college.

How much money have you got in your pocket at the moment?
I have about 75 cents. I don’t carry a lot of cash. I use my debit card.

What is the worst thing you’ve ever worn?
When I was younger I would put a ponytail on the very top of my head with an orange ribbon. I used to do that for every single competition.

Who would be your three celebrity dinner party guests and why?
Alicia Keys would be in the corner playing. Will Smith would be opposite me so I could see his fine face. Then I’d have the comedian-actor Kevin Hart for a bit of comedy whenever Alicia Keys got tired.
